Over the last six years, several events occurred that prompted the creation of Wise Passage. From a personal perspective, Janene Brenneman, CEO and Founder of Wise Passage, had gone through a drawn-out, five-year quest before finding satisfying relief from her own menopause-related symptoms. She finally found solutions through a Nurse Practitioner who integrates traditional and alternative medicine. In her case, the traditional medical system was not able to deliver what she needed.
When the combined hormone therapy arm of the Women’s Health Initiative hormone study was abruptly halted in July 2002, it signaled that there would be a significant change in midlife women’s healthcare across the entire country. As it turned out, several million women who were on hormone therapy at that time stopped taking it during the next year. As reported in the media, a large percentage of them began experiencing disturbing menopause-related symptoms again, with few finding adequate solutions.
Before starting Wise Passage, there needed to be documentation of the market need on a broad basis. The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) conducted a survey in 1999 and 2000 with 58,000 women ages 47 to 55 in managed care plans about the depth and quality of information received from physicians about menopause. The average women received only half of the NCQA’s recommended information about:- Hormone therapy and other treatment options
- Personal and family characteristics affecting health risks
- Individual concerns
The increased confusion about hormone therapy – added on top of the existing frustration about obtaining inadequate information from the traditional medical system clearly validated the need for a different approach to meeting midlife women’s health needs.
This was when the idea for Wise Passage was born.
As the 37 million baby boomer women are entering or are in the thick of the menopausal transition, the company’s goal is to make significant improvements in midlife women’s health by offering:- Trustworthy information about menopause
- Relief of menopause-related symptoms
- Knowledge about whether hormone therapy makes sense
- Prevention of serious diseases beyond menopause
- Guidance to come into one’s personal power and midlife wisdom
- A supportive community of midlife women
Wise Passage is a virtual company based in Denver, Colorado with Nurse Consultants located across the U.S. |
