IRREGULAR PERIODS
Changes in menstrual patterns are the hallmark of entering the menopausal transition (perimenopause). Approximately 90% of women experience 4 to 8 years of menstrual cycle changes before menopause. The most typical menstrual changes are:- Shorter/longer menstrual cycles
- Lighter/heavier bleeding
- Shorter/longer length of periods
- Skipped periods
There can be random combinations of these pattern changes, too. The technical definition of menopause is when your periods have been absent for a full year.
The fluctuation of hormones during perimenopause can lead to these changes in menstrual patterns. During our reproductive years, ovulation tends to occur on a regular basis, which leads to regular periods. Lack of ovulation can cause estrogen levels to be high or normal and progesterone levels to be low, which allows the monthly buildup of the uterine lining (endometrium) to continue uninterrupted. Eventually the lining breaks down as estrogen levels decline, resulting in heavy, erratic bleeding that can last a number of days.
Irregular periods are normal and will eventually go away. They do not require treatment unless accompanied by other bothersome symptoms such as headaches or mood swings. However, if you are experiencing heavy uterine bleeding, this should be explored with your healthcare provider because it can be caused not only by menopause but a number of other conditions as well.
