VAGINAL DRYNESS
Vaginal dryness, often associated with painful intercourse, may emerge during perimenopause, but is more common during the first few years after menopause. Vaginal dryness usually shows up initially as lack of lubrication during sexual relations. However, it can be transient for some women, improving when hormones balance out postmenopause.
Women undergoing artificial menopause due to surgery, chemotherapy or drug therapy typically experience problematic vaginal dryness more often than women with a natural menopausal transition.
The cause of vaginal dryness is most likely a result of lowered estrogen levels due to lowered estrogen causing thinning of the vaginal lining. In addition, the vagina and surrounding connective tissue can lose elasticity, and have inadequate blood flow that leads to diminishing secretions. The vagina tends to become shorter and narrower, more fragile, and possibly more irritable, which is labeled as atrophy.
Low level of sexual activity can contribute to dryness also. The “use it or lose it” principle applies in this situation. Regular intercourse stretches out the vagina and improves blood supply and lubrication. Also, regular masturbation can improve vaginal dryness and irritability also.
Kegel exercises, adequate fluid intake (64 ounces per day), avoiding dehydrating drinks containing alcohol and caffeine, and eating foods containing phytoestrogens such as soy and flaxseed are all a good place to start for improving vaginal dryness.
